A preacher once said “Put your hands up all of you who wish to go to heaven” everyone immediately put their hands up. Then he said “Now, hands up those of you who wish to go today” Not surprisingly, no one put up their hand.
The prospect of death is very fearful, especially for those of us who understand it less. But death is the one thing we are all guaranteed, (none of us will get out alive.) “The weary and despairing meet death as a friend, the cynical and disillusioned meet it with indifference, the happy and healthy see it as an enemy.” But whether it is viewed as a friend or foe, it comes to all of us. The mystery of death is as old as humanity. But when Jesus Christ came into the world, I believe He shone a light into the dark corner of death and showed it to be a mystery no more. Speaking to His disciples about His own death, He said “do not let your hearts be troubled, trust in God, trust in Me. In my father’s house there are many rooms, if it were not so, I would not tell you this. I am going there to prepare a place for you, a place where we will be together for eternity. “
Not everyone has this belief, this faith. And that’s ok. But those of us who do, will undoubtedly find it easier to carry the heavy load of bereavement. They will continue to communicate to their loved ones, and they will hear them through their inner voice!, they will look for the everyday signs of confirmation, love and hope, which I believe is there, if your eyes are open to it. And they will KNOW that they will be reunited again some day.
And yes, the truth is no one can really prove there is life after death, but in the same breath, no one can really prove their isn’t. And I’d rather go through this often hard life believing (sure I’ve nothing to lose and everything to gain) I believe this ‘Divine Force’, I choose to call God, works in epic, mysterious ways. I believe that every single meeting in our lives is in some way orchestrated by this Divine Force and the ‘strangers’ to whom we are drawn have something to teach us and us something to teach them (they are either a lesson or a blessing) If we are open to this, we will see that everything happens for a reason, even with the most heartbreaking and questionable things, there are no coincidences. It’s often far from easy, but try to trust in this, try to see the connection to everyone else, we are all on the same road, back home, tune in to the ‘bigger picture’ try to ‘let go and let God’.
“There is a wealth that has nothing to do with dollars, that comes from the perspective and wisdom of paying attention to your life. It has everything to teach you” Oprah
We must try to see the good in every day (for it is there) KNOW that you are never alone! and remind others who feel that they are!
Sometimes life seems hard to bear
Full of sorrow, trouble and woe
It’s then we have to remember
That it’s in the valley we grow.
If we always stayed on the mountain top
And never experienced pain,
We would never appreciate God’s love
And would be living in vain.
We have so much to learn
And our growth is very slow,
Sometimes we need the mountain tops,
But it’s in the valley we grow.
We do not always understand
Why things happen as they do,
But I am very sure of one thing
My Lord will see me through.
The little valleys are nothing
When we picture Christ on the cross
He went through the valley of death
His victory was Satan’s loss.
Forgive me Lord, for complaining
When I’m feeling so very low.
Just give me a gentle reminder
That it’s in the valleys I grow.
Continue to strengthen me, Lord
And use my life each day
To share your love with others
And help them find their way.
Thank you for the valleys, Lord
For this one thing I know
The mountain tops are glorious
But it’s in the valleys I grow.
Stay busy (doing more good for others), BUT Look after yourself, you can’t pour from an empty cup!, Don’t be afraid to TALK, Open your eyes to the beauty and good that is in every day, remember that there is always someone much worse off than you, try to be grateful for the things you have that other’s may not have, Forgive (it’s one weight you can set down) and remember God’s Love for you – those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day…..X
